We completed the rose garden along the southern side of our house in the July 4th weekend, 2007. The weather this week was absolutely fantastic, dry and not too hot (in the 80's). Right after construction was completed, it rained and refreshed the entire garden.
The garden was envisioned a year ago, but work on this site has started a couple years back. Here is a rough timeline:
- 2005: planted 16 arborvitae in February, built the arbor that spring, and planted the Japanese wisteria soon after. At the end of that year, we got some really bad storms that collapsed the section of the fence shared with our neighbor Jane.
- 2006: pulled out the old deck, cleared the grounds, and planted the roses on raised beds. Our very nice neighbor Jane rebuilt the fence this year.
- 2007: Had Town & Country Fence rebuilt the entire fence around the house for $5000; built the retaining wall and pave the patio. Construction material cost is about $1500, and planting cost is about $2000.
The swings were added in mid-August. We bought them from Tom of the Amish Country Originals on Hwy 9. Absolutely amicable and down to earth guy. This is where we also bought the gazebo for the goldfish pond. The loveseat swing is a Comfo-Swing made by Berlin Lawn Products. Indeed it's very comfortable to sit on, it sure beats those $60 swing sold at other hardware stores.

The fountain was from Lucca Statuary European Garden Ornaments in Ballard. They manufacture and sell their own fountains. We absolutely love it, the maid has a very lovely face.
The arborvitae are Emerald Green 'Thuja occidentalis' from Big Trees.
The late-spring white flowering 'Longissima Alba' Japanese wisteria was from Flower World.
