So it's come to an end. Monday, we're leaving Tokyo heading home. Before heading to the airport, we invited our friend, her hubby and their youngest son to a farewell lunch. Since we loved sushi, M-san took all of us to a popular super-kaiten sushi (回店寿司) restaurant in Kisarazu called Yamato (remodeled and reopened on Mar 4th 2006). At this restaurant, many types of live seafood was kept in holding tanks until ordered, and there are touch-screen panels for you to order from.
Such a great sushi lunch we had! This was befitting the last meal before leaving Japan. This was the most unassuming form of enjoying sushi, with the freshest nigiri that you could ask for, presented in the purest form, so smooth and shiny, free of any pretention. Each piece of sushi was sizable, the fish draped elegantly over the rice covering it entirely and both tails flowed generously like a wedding gown down to both sides. We ate so many things never eaten in the States, I couldn't remember them all. Here is my best attempt at jotting down what we had:
- Ise ebi miso shiru (Spiny lobster soup イセエビ 蟹汁, 伊勢海老の味噌汁) „180, in season from Oct thru Dec
- Ara shiru, a clear broth with fish meat „180
- Hotate (scallop of the fan-shaped shellfish)
- Hotategai (ほたて貝枝) nigiri
- Bakagai (round clam)
- Aoyagi nigiri (the tongue of bakagai)
- Ama ebi (甘えび, sweet shrimp)
- Botan ebi (big ama ebi)
- Kuruma ebi (scampi)
- Uni „480
- Otoro
- Chawanmushi
- Ji-Kinmedai nigiri (地金目鯛), sweet meat, caught from Amatsu Kominato, Chiba (天津小湊, あまつ こみなと). I had 2 plates of it, „380 each
- Nigiri boat: sanma (サンマ / 秋刀魚, pacific saury, mackerel pike), ikuranose (イクラノセ, salmon roe), 北海つぶ貝 (North Sea whelk): „380
- One whole grilled unagi boat, yummy
- Snow crab (ズワイガニ)
- Ikura (salmon roe)
- Melon (both white and red)
Matcha was free. M-san liked the matcha that we drank here so he bought a box of as a gift for us. The bill for the whole meal was only „8300! Unbelievable quality for the price.
M-san took us all the way to the checkin counter and waited until we went through security checkpoint. This concluded our memorable trip to Japan.
To our friend and M-san, いろいろ おせわになって、どもありがとうございました。
